Moving Across State Lines

Whether it’s for work, family, or fun, relocating out of state can be a stressful and exciting time. Crossing state lines makes a move more challenging, but with a little research and preparation an easy move can be achieved. If you’re looking to call Henderson, Nevada home, then Inspriada has everything you need.

Before the Move
Getting prepared to relocate begins months before the trinkets are wrapped and the boxes are packed. Start by visiting your new city. Explore your new home, find a location you like and feel safe in, and talk to the locals to get a feel of the community. Research the cost of living, career options, and schools to ensure there are no surprises once you arrive. If you are planning to move to a master-planned community, like Inspirada, information on community amenities, schools, and local events will be easily accessible.

After selecting your location, it is time to secure a place to live and set your moving budget. If you are building a new home be mindful of the construction timeline and plan accordingly as it will effect both your moving budget and timeline. To understand the homebuilding process, check out our Homebuilding 101 blog to see if this option is right for you.

Once your move-in date is secure, the real fun starts, and you guessed it — it starts with more research! The three main ways to transport your belongs across state lines are hiring professional movers, renting a moving truck, or using a container service such as PODS. Select the option that works best for you and your family after conducting some research and getting a few quotes. We recommend getting quotes from at least three companies to ensure you get the best price.

Pack, Purge, or Donate
The cost of your move will vary depending on the overall weight of the items you’re moving. Start by eliminating out-of-date or unused items. Once you have decided what you are moving, a Packing Calculator can help determine the amount of boxes needed. Now it’s finally time to start packing. One important tip to note is to keep your valuables safe — that family heirloom, your grandma’s diamond ring, or your irreplaceable sports memorabilia — by keeping them with you at all times, so save some room in your car for those items. Additionally, since moving companies can take up to 14 days to deliver your belongings, you should plan to bring two weeks’ worth of clothing with you.

Tying Up Loose Ends
Before you leave town there are a number of things you can do to make the transition easier. Collect copies of all your important documents, including health, veterinary, and school records, and keep them in a safe place. Change your address and start forwarding your mail to your new home. Notify your new utility companies about your upcoming move — you don’t want to start your new adventure in the dark by walking into a house without electricity.

Extra Tips
Save all of your moving receipts. If you are relocating for work you may be able to get money back next tax season if you meet a certain criteria. If you donated items during your packing process you may be able to deduct a portion of the value against your income tax.
