12 Natural Wonders 5 Hours or Less From Henderson

Despite our best efforts, it can be challenging to get in the car and travel to a nearby attraction. To make it easier to experience the natural wonders all within 5 hours or less from your home in Henderson, we did the research for you. Here is a list of 12 local sites you have to experience. Ready, set, go:

Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, NV – Less than 10 minutes
Inspirada residents are lucky to have a playground full of natural beauty right in our backyard. The 48,438 acres of land are filled with trails showcasing desert vistas and petroglyphs.

Do: Stop and appreciate the petroglyphs, hike this beginner trail, and this more difficult trail.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, NV – 30 minutes
Visit breathtaking red rock formulations and explore 26 hiking trails with your leashed furry friend. Park fees vary.

Do: Take in the views on the 13-Mile Scenic Drive via your car or mountain bike. Or, make it even more memorable with a scooter tour.

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, NV – 35 minutes
With a higher elevation, this area is usually 10-15 degrees cooler than Las Vegas. In the spring, abundant wildflowers are common. The area is rich with history, including a German actress, a comedy actor, and one of the most financially successful individuals of all time. There is a $9 entrance fee, dogs on leashes are allowed.

Do: Walk the ranch (visitor’s center). View some of the oldest buildings in Nevada, including an 1860 blacksmith shop. Bring a picnic for the lawn area. Trek this trail and see a summer show.

Lake Mead, NV – 43 minutes
Explore the largest reservoir in the nation. While not naturally formed, this is a great area to enjoy the outdoors.

Do: If you’re a fan of strenuous hikes, this one is a must. You can also trek two (1. and 2.) highly-rated and easy hikes.

Mt. Charleston, NV – 1 hour, 3 minutes
To get away from the heat, see fall foliage or spring flowers, and even ski, Mt. Charleston is perfect for the day or weekend.

Do: When weather permits, hike this moderate trail, or if you’re looking for a challenge opt for this trail. In the winter, ski, snowboard, and sled in Lee Canyon.

Eat: Take in the amazing views and get a snack for your pup at the Mt. Charleston Lodge.

Stay: Book a room at this resort or a cabin here.

Valley of Fire State Park, NV – 1 hour, 12 minutes
Both petroglyphs and unique, wave-like sandstone formations can be found in the park. The park allows dogs on a leash and the entrance fee is only $10.

Do: This hike will give you views of the unique and quintessential rock ripple formations, while this one offers red-rock formations and petroglyphs. Or go all out with a UTV tour.

Eat: If you’re in the mood for a burger, stop by Sugar’s Home Plate or chow down on Mexican food at La Fonda.

Stay: The North Shore Inn offers rooms close to the park.

Death Valley National Park, CA – 2 hours, 13 minutes
Home to North America’s lowest point, salt flat, sand dunes, and more. The fee to enter is $25 per vehicle and gives you access for 7 days.

Do: Although the mystery has now been solved, for years the Death Valley Sailing Stones — rocks that move across the desert floor — remained a conundrum. Just make sure you have good tires, 4×4, and a high clearance. Along the way, visit the Tea Kettle Junction.

Eat: Get Indian Tacos (fry bread instead of a tortilla) and shaved ice at Timbisha Indian Tacos, or enjoy a cold one with your meal at Panamint Springs Restaurant.

Stay: Lodging options include this inn, this ranch, or this Airstream trailer.

Cathedral Gorge State Park, NV – 3 hrs, 1 min
A state park with some unique views and an easy hike. $5 entrance fee for Nevada residents.

Do: The only hike in the park is easy, and rewarding: many unique formations and views await. Relax in a hot spring nearby before heading home.

Eat: Ghost Town Art & Coffee Co. offers gourmet coffee and snacks.

Stay: There is an inn nearby, but you can make a day trip for this one as there is only one trail in the park.

Zion National Park, UT – 3 hours, 3 minutes
We are so close to what is considered by many as one of the most beautiful national parks. The $30 entrance fee per car gives you access to the park for 7 days.

Do: Beat the crowds in the morning so you can enjoy this scenic view as you enter the park. If you’re not afraid of heights, this trail is a must. The narrows offer unique views you can only find in Zion.

Eat: Grab coffee at Café Soleil, Mexican food at Oscars Café, or Italian food at Zion Pizza and Noodle Co.

Stay: Lodging options include this inn, a villa, or a lodge. Wanting something more unique? Stay at this picturesque cottage, or this cabin with multiple beds and easy access to the park.

Joshua Tree National Park, CA – 3 hours, 40 minutes
This area is quirky, in the best way possible. With trails, natural beauty, and some local flair this is the perfect spot to visit. If you plan on hiking, avoid the summer. Entry fees into the park vary.

Do: Hike this trail before perusing some of the vintage shops in the area, like The End and Black Luck Vintage.

Eat: Get something healthy at the Natural Sisters Café, or reward yourself with pizza after a hike at Pie For The People.

Stay: Stay at the cutest motel ever or this luxe lodge in Palm Springs. There are plenty of fun Airbnbs equipped with porch views, hot tubs, and tout amazing views of the stars.

Bryce Canyon, UT – 4 hours, 16 minutes
Most people visit this park in the summer, but you can avoid the crowds and visit in the fall or spring. During the winter there is a chance of snowfall. Entrance fee is $25 and is good for seven days.

Do: This hike is a must, then take a short walk to view this lookout.

Eat: Get some fantastic BBQ at Idk Barbecue or visit Stone Hearth Grille for upscale dining (note they are closed during the winter).

Stay: Snag a room at The Lodge at Bryce Canyon or find cabins on Airbnb.

Grand Canyon National Park, AZ – 4 hours, 39 minutes
People travel from across the globe to see this natural wonder, and you’re less than 5-hours away! The $30 entrance fee per vehicle grants you access for seven days.

Do: Take in the views of the Grand Canyon with this trail. If you want a challenging hike with amazing views, do this one.

Eat: Dining options are limited and we encourage you to visit South Rims in nearby Williams. Or head to Flagstaff for delicious options and picturesque views. Grab a locally-brewed beer at Mother Road Brewing Co. or choose from delicious Thai, French cuisine, or wood-fired pizza.

Stay: Many of the lodges located inside the park book up months in advance, if you find an opening and want to be in the park, book it! Choose from a cabin, a new-build home with backyard vistas and Grand Canyon Railway views, an Airstream trailer close to the park, or a remodeled condo in the heart of Flagstaff.
