Sibelius – Finlandia

Finlandia is a nationalist piece written by Sibelius as a reaction to the new severe Russian Censorship towards artists.

The piece was performed under different names in order to pass the censorship. The piece evokes the struggles of Finish people at that time, contrasting rough and violent music gestures with traditional melodies.

Shostakovich – Violin Concerto n.1 (Solo De Ann Letourneau)

De Ann is back to perform the beautiful solo of Shostakovich First Violin Concerto. Shostakovich started working on the piece around the Zhdanov Doctrine, which was a form of censorship in Soviet Union at that time. All artists needed to follow the rules stablished by the government, otherwise they would be in risk of prosecution.

Shostakovich was already called out for innapropriate writing and then for second time he was denunciated. Lost his job at the conservatory and had to strict his writing to movie music and works that would help his official rehabilitation. The Violin Concerto was then put aside, he only got back to it years later.
